Claude vs ChatGPT: Plans, prices and which one fits which job
Both assistants start free and cost $20 a month at the first paid tier. The differences lie in the tiers above that, the coding tools and how each one handles limits.

Plans, prices and features checked on the official pages on November 2, 2026.
Claude and ChatGPT are close enough that the better choice depends on the job and the plan, not on a single winner. Both have a free tier and a $20 per month paid tier, and both sell higher tiers for heavy coding and agent work. Claude is pitched by Anthropic as a collaborator that produces editable documents, spreadsheets and slides from your files and apps, while ChatGPT’s current plan page leans on its Codex coding agent and the GPT-6 model family.
One limit on this guide: OpenAI’s main ChatGPT pricing and help pages returned access errors when read on November 2, 2026. ChatGPT details below come from OpenAI’s Codex pricing documentation, which lists every ChatGPT plan and price but focuses on coding. Claude details come from Anthropic’s own pricing, product and documentation pages.

What each assistant is and who it is for
Claude is Anthropic’s assistant. It runs on the web, on iOS and Android, and in desktop apps for macOS and Windows. According to Anthropic, you point it at files and tools, describe the outcome, and it returns editable deliverables. It can also run tasks on a schedule or keep working in the cloud after you close your laptop.
ChatGPT is OpenAI’s assistant. Its plan page names two current models, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna, and Codex, a coding agent that OpenAI says can understand codebases, build and test features, fix bugs and review changes.

Short version of who each one suits:
- Claude: people who want finished documents, spreadsheets and slides, long agent runs, and tight links to Microsoft 365, Slack, Gmail and Chrome.
- ChatGPT: people who want a broad consumer assistant with a cheap entry tier, plus Codex on web, command line, IDE and iOS.
Plans and prices: What you pay at each tier
The two lineups mirror each other at the bottom and diverge at the top. Claude has a single $100 Max tier and a $200 Ultra tier. ChatGPT has a cheaper $8 Go tier and a Pro plan that starts at $100.

| Plan | Claude | ChatGPT |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0. Limited usage every 5 hours and every week. No Opus. | $0. Quick coding tasks; image generation not available. |
| Entry paid | No equivalent | Go, $8 per month. Lightweight coding tasks. |
| Standard paid | Pro, $20 per month, or $17 per month billed annually ($200 up front) | Plus, $20 per month. Codex on web, CLI, IDE and iOS; can add credits. |
| Heavy use | Max, $100 per month: 5x Pro usage | Pro, from $100 per month, with tiers at $100, $200 or $500 |
| Top individual tier | Ultra, $200 per month: no 5-hour limit for verified accounts, 10x Pro usage weekly | $500 Pro tier adds Ultrafast mode |
| Teams | Team Standard seat $20 per seat per month billed annually ($25 monthly); Premium seat $100 annually ($125 monthly) | Business, $20 per user per month billed annually, $25 monthly, 2 or more users |
| Enterprise | US$20 per seat per month billed annually, 20-seat minimum, plus usage at API rates | Enterprise and Edu: contact sales |
Prices checked on November 2, 2026.
Two details matter when comparing. First, Claude limits reset on two clocks, every 5 hours and every week, and each higher tier is a multiple of Pro. ChatGPT’s page says Pro plans currently have no five-hour limit, though weekly limits may apply, and Plus and Pro users can buy extra credits when they hit a limit. Second, ChatGPT’s published figures are estimates: for Plus, local messages per five-hour period range from about 350 to 3,000 on GPT-6 Luna and about 15 to 160 on GPT-6.1 Sol, depending on the task.
Claude’s own top model, Fable, is gated by plan: available through usage credits on Pro, included up to half of the weekly limit on Max, and included on Enterprise.
Key features compared: Where Claude and ChatGPT differ
On Anthropic’s pricing page, even the free Claude plan includes web search, file creation, code execution, memory, app and tool connections, Artifacts, and up to 5 Projects. Pro adds Claude Code, task handoff and scheduling, Claude in Chrome and Microsoft 365, and the Dashboards beta.
Claude’s product page says edits appear as tracked changes or highlighted cells in Word and Excel, and that permission settings can make Claude show its plan and wait for approval. It also says Claude asks before permanently deleting files.
On the ChatGPT side, the pages read for this guide describe Codex, hosted agents, voice (including a voice feature in Codex, priced at about $0.05 per minute from your Codex budget on Plus), image generation, projects and memory. The detail OpenAI gives in those documents is mostly about coding and developers, so a full consumer feature comparison would need OpenAI’s own ChatGPT pages.
Anthropic has also donated its Agent Skills format to a neutral foundation; see Anthropic hands Agent Skills to a neutral foundation for what that means for reusable instructions across tools.
Claude AI vs Claude Code, and the coding question
People often search for Claude AI against Claude Code. They are different surfaces of the same family. Claude is the chat assistant. Claude Code is Anthropic’s coding agent that, per its product page, runs in a terminal, in VS Code and JetBrains extensions, on the web at claude.ai/code, in the desktop app, on iOS and Android, and from Slack. It is available for macOS, Linux and Windows.
Access: Anthropic says Pro, Max and Ultra plans include Claude Code. Team lists it for every seat. Using it through the Claude Console is billed at standard API pricing.
For ChatGPT, the counterpart is Codex. Plus includes Codex on web, CLI, IDE and iOS. The Free and Go plans cover quick or lightweight coding tasks only. An API key also unlocks Codex in the CLI, SDK or IDE, but without cloud features such as GitHub review or Slack.
Which is better for coding is not settled by either company’s pages, and neither publishes a head-to-head. For context on how coding agents compare more broadly, see Kimi K2 vs. Qwen 3 vs. Claude Code.
Which one fits which job
- Writing and document work: Claude’s pitch is editable deliverables and tracked changes inside Microsoft 365. ChatGPT is a fine general writer, but OpenAI’s pages read today do not describe an equivalent.
- Coding on a budget: ChatGPT Go at $8 gives lightweight coding; Claude has no tier below $20 that includes Claude Code.
- Serious daily coding: compare Claude Pro or Max with ChatGPT Plus or Pro. The decisive factor is how fast you hit limits, since both are metered.
- Long autonomous runs: Anthropic says Claude Code can run for hours or days on tasks such as migrations, and both companies sell higher tiers for exactly this.
- Small teams: both start at about $20 per seat per month billed annually. Anthropic and OpenAI each state that business or team data is not used for training by default.
- Casual questions: either free tier works. Try both on your real tasks before paying.
How to get started with either one
- Start on the free plan of each and give both the same three real tasks from your week.
- Check the model you are actually on. Claude’s Free plan has no Opus, and Fable needs Pro credits or Max.
- If you hit limits within a day, note which plan multiple the page offers: Max or Ultra for Claude, a Pro tier for ChatGPT.
- Pick monthly billing first. Claude Pro is cheaper annually ($17 per month, $200 up front), but that commits you for a year.
- For coding, install the terminal or IDE tool (Claude Code or Codex) and run it on a small branch before moving real work.
Gemini, Copilot, Perplexity and Grok: How they relate
Many readers ask about a three- or four-way comparison. This guide only covers the two assistants whose official pages could be read, so it does not quote prices for Gemini, Copilot or Grok. Check each maker’s page before deciding.
For research with cited sources, Perplexity is the usual third name. The guides Perplexity AI vs ChatGPT for research and Perplexity AI pricing (2026) cover sources, search and cost.
Common questions
Is Claude AI better than ChatGPT?
Neither company’s official pages claim one is better overall. Claude emphasizes deliverables and agent work; ChatGPT emphasizes breadth and Codex. The practical difference is in plan structure and limits, so test both free tiers on your own work.
What is the price difference between Claude AI and ChatGPT?
