Claude Pro plan: Prices, usage limits and how Free, Pro and Max compare
Claude Pro costs $20 a month, or $17 a month billed annually, and Max starts at $100. Here is what each plan includes, how its usage limits work and who each one is for.

Plans, prices and features checked on the official pages on October 19, 2026.
The Claude Pro plan costs $20 per month billed monthly, or $17 per month on annual billing ($200 up front), according to Anthropic’s pricing page. It gives at least 5x the usage of the Free plan per five-hour session, adds Opus, Claude Code and Research, and is the right step for people who hit Free limits regularly. Max starts at $100 per month and is aimed at heavy daily use.
Anthropic does not publish fixed message counts for any plan. Limits are described as usage-based, and the company says they are subject to change.

Claude Free, Pro and Max side by side: What each plan includes
Claude is Anthropic’s AI assistant. It runs on the web at claude.ai, in desktop apps and in mobile apps, and the same account works on all of them. Anthropic describes its mission as building AI systems people can rely on, and it operates as a Public Benefit Corporation. For the business side, see our report on Anthropic stock, ownership and the IPO.
The three individual plans differ in how much you can use, which models you can pick and which features unlock:

- Free: chat on web, desktop and mobile, web search, file creation and code execution, memory, connectors, skills, Artifacts, voice mode, Claude Design, Slides and Docs, and up to 5 projects. Models are Sonnet and Haiku.
- Pro: everything in Free, plus Claude Code, Claude Science, Research, Dashboards (beta), task handoff and scheduling, Claude in Chrome, Claude for Microsoft 365 and usage credits. Models are Opus, Sonnet and Haiku.
- Max: everything in Pro, plus higher output limits, early access to advanced features, priority access at high-traffic times and monthly API credits.
Anthropic also sells Team and Enterprise plans for organizations. They are outside the scope of this guide.
Plans and pricing: What Free, Pro, Max 5x and Max 20x cost
| Plan | Price | Main limits and models |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Usage limits apply on a rolling five-hour window. Sonnet and Haiku. No Claude Code, Research or usage credits. |
| Pro | $20/month, or $17/month billed annually ($200 up front) | At least 5x Free’s allowance per five-hour session, plus weekly limits. Opus, Sonnet and Haiku. Fable through usage credits. |
| Max 5x | $100/month | 5x Pro’s usage per session, higher output limits, weekly limit across all models. $100 monthly API credits. |
| Max 20x | $200/month | 20x Pro’s usage per session, higher output limits, weekly limit across all models. $200 monthly API credits. |
Prices checked on October 19, 2026. Prices exclude applicable tax. Anthropic’s help center says the web prices may differ on mobile, and that Max is sold monthly only, with no annual option listed.

On Max, Fable is limited to 50% of weekly limits, according to the pricing page. Upgrading from a lower Max tier to a higher one is prorated for the rest of the billing cycle. Anthropic states there are no standing discounts on individual plans.
How Claude usage limits work: Five-hour sessions and weekly caps
Anthropic’s pricing page says limits reset on a rolling five-hour session window, and that there is no fixed message count. How quickly you use up a session depends on what you ask. Long conversations, large files and heavier models consume more than short questions.
Pro and Max also have a weekly limit. On Max, the help center says the weekly limit applies across all models and resets at a fixed time assigned to your account. You can see the next reset in Settings > Usage. Max also has a separate weekly limit for Fable. Anthropic adds that it may introduce other limits, such as monthly caps or limits on specific models or features, to manage capacity.
Claude and Claude Code draw from the same limits, and IDE usage counts too, according to Anthropic. That matters if you plan to code with your subscription. Our guide to the Claude Code subscription, plans and install steps covers that side.
What happens when you reach a limit
On Pro, Anthropic lists four options: upgrade to Max 5x, enable usage credits, switch to a Console account to buy API credits, or wait for the reset. On Max, you can move from 5x to 20x, enable usage credits, use a Console account, or wait.
Max includes monthly API credits, but the help center says they cannot be used in Claude Code or the Claude apps. They apply to API use only. For what API use costs, see our AI API pricing tracker.
Claude Code may also finish its current step after you hit the five-hour limit, showing “Usage limit reached – wrapping up.” Anthropic says this small allowance counts toward the weekly limit. Pro gets it once per weekly period, and Max can get it each time a five-hour limit is reached, within the weekly cap. Anthropic says it is rolling out gradually.
Who should choose Free, Pro or Max
Free fits occasional use: quick questions, drafting, summaries and trying the interface. It includes web search, files, memory and Artifacts, so it is a real product rather than a trial, but it excludes Opus, Claude Code and Research.
Pro fits people who use Claude most days for writing, analysis, research or coding and keep running into Free limits. The annual price works out to $17 per month, which saves $40 over a year compared with paying $20 monthly.
Max fits people who run long multi-step tasks or use Claude Code heavily. Anthropic says Max can run longer jobs such as reports, spreadsheets and presentations in the background. Max 5x suits steady heavy use. Max 20x is for the highest volume. Because Pro lets you buy usage credits when you hit a limit, some users may prefer that to a $100 jump, though Anthropic does not publish a price comparison between the two routes.
How to sign up for Claude Pro
- Go to claude.ai and use the login page to sign in or create an account. The same login works in the apps.
- Open the pricing page at claude.com/pricing and compare the plans.
- Choose Pro and pick monthly ($20) or annual ($200 up front) billing.
- Enter payment details and confirm.
- Check Settings > Usage to see how much of your session and weekly allowance you have used.
Subscription billing is managed in the account settings, and Anthropic notes that prices in mobile apps can differ from the web.
Apps and downloads: Where Claude runs
Anthropic’s download page lists a desktop app for macOS, Windows (x64 and arm64, also in the Microsoft Store) and a Linux beta for Ubuntu and Debian. For phones, the page links to the App Store for iOS and a mobile page at claude.ai/mobile. It does not name an Android app. Conversations, projects, memory and preferences sync across devices while you are signed in, and the apps work on Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise, though some features need a paid plan.
Memory is one of the features available on Free. If you want to understand how assistants keep context between chats, read our explainer on AI agent memory.
Claude compared with other chatbots
This guide covers Claude’s own plans, so it does not rank rival chatbots on price or quality, and Anthropic’s pages make no comparison. What the pages do show is a three-step structure: a free tier with limited usage, a roughly $20 paid tier, and high-usage tiers from $100. When comparing with ChatGPT or Gemini, check each maker’s own pricing page on the same date, because limits and model access change often.
Differences specific to Claude that Anthropic states: usage is measured in rolling five-hour sessions plus weekly caps, Claude Code is part of Pro and Max rather than a separate purchase, and the highest tiers are defined as multiples of Pro usage.
Common questions
Can Claude generate images?
Not in the way image generators do. Anthropic’s help center says Claude does not produce photorealistic images or video. It can build diagrams, charts and interactive visuals in the conversation using HTML and SVG, in beta on web and desktop. It can also analyze images you upload.
Can Claude watch videos or build a website?
The help center says Claude Motion creates short animations from code and exports them as MP4. It is in beta on Team and Enterprise plans, and it does not use a video generation model. The official pages reviewed do not say whether Claude can analyze uploaded video, so this guide makes no claim either way. For websites, Anthropic’s product page does not say Artifacts build sites and points to Claude Code for coding work.
Is there a free Claude plan, and what does it cost to go beyond it?
Yes. Free costs $0 and includes Sonnet and Haiku, web search, memory and Artifacts, with usage limits on a rolling five-hour window. Pro is the first paid step at $20 per month, or $17 on annual billing.
What is the difference between Max 5x and Max 20x?
Max 5x costs $100 per month and gives five times Pro’s per-session usage. Max 20x costs $200 per month and gives twenty times. Both include higher output limits, priority access at busy times and monthly API credits of $100 or $200.
