ChatGPT Plus costs $20 per month. Compared with Free, OpenAI lists higher usage limits, a broader choice of models, priority access in busy periods and no ads. Go ($8), Pro (from $100) and Business (per seat) sit around it for lighter use, heavy use and teams.

OpenAI changes plan names, limits and promotions often, so this guide stays with what its pages state and points to the live page whenever a number is not published.

Which plan fits you, from Free to Business

OpenAI sells ChatGPT in two groups. Individual plans are Free, Go, Plus and Pro. Workspace plans are Business, Enterprise and Edu, which add admin controls and shared workspaces.

  • Free: the starting point. OpenAI says Free users get unlimited everyday text chats, subject to abuse safeguards.
  • Go: a low-cost step up with higher limits for features such as image generation, file uploads and data analysis.
  • Plus: the main paid plan for daily use, with higher limits and no ads.
  • Pro: for people who hit Plus limits regularly. It includes everything in Plus and is sold at several price points.
  • Business: per-seat plans for teams, with a dedicated workspace and admin tools.

If you only chat now and then, Free is enough to judge the product. If you use ChatGPT for work every day and keep running into limits, Plus is the usual next step.

What ChatGPT Free gives you, and what it does not

Free needs only an account, and it works on the web and in the apps. OpenAI states that text chats are unlimited for everyday use, while file uploads, image generation, voice, data analysis and other tools each have their own usage limits. Free users can also create up to three active scheduled tasks.

Free and Go accounts may show ads. OpenAI says the rollout is gradual and regional, that ads do not appear in Temporary Chats, and that accounts identified as belonging to people under 18 do not see them. Free users can switch to an Ads-Free experience, which OpenAI says comes with lower usage limits and reduced feature access.

The free image generator is part of this tier, but OpenAI does not publish its limit as a fixed number, so check the plans page for the current allowance.

ChatGPT Go vs Plus: what the extra $12 buys

Go costs $8 per month. According to OpenAI, it builds on Free with higher limits for eligible features, including image generation, file uploads and data analysis, and voice mode keeps the same limits as Free. Go does not include the top models that Plus offers.

Plus costs $20 per month and adds more than larger allowances. OpenAI’s pricing materials list priority access during high-traffic periods, broader model options, voice conversations, image generation, file uploads and analysis, projects, scheduled tasks and custom GPTs. Plus also unlocks Codex on the web, command line, IDE extension and iOS, plus optional extra usage through ChatGPT credits.

The practical split: Go suits people whose Free image or file allowance runs out and who do not need the strongest models. Plus suits those who want the stronger models, coding tools and an ad-free account. For a view of the models themselves, see our piece on what GPT-5 means for AI.

ChatGPT Plus vs Pro: when $100 or more makes sense

Pro includes all Plus features and is offered at $100, $200 and $500 per month. OpenAI says annual billing and paying several months in advance are not available for Pro.

OpenAI’s help center says new sign-ups and upgrades to the $200 tier were paused as of September 10, 2026, and that existing $200 subscribers are not affected. A separate OpenAI article describes new $200 subscriptions as available again with a lower allowance. Because those pages disagree, check the pricing page before planning around the $200 tier.

OpenAI does not publish exact usage multiples against Plus on the pages cited here, so any specific figure should be treated as unconfirmed. Pro makes sense if you already hit Plus limits several times a week, for example with long coding sessions or heavy research.

ChatGPT Business and Enterprise: seats, data and admin controls

Business is the multi-user plan. It requires at least two seats and comes in two seat types, Standard and Premium. OpenAI states that Business workspace data is excluded from model training by default, and that this includes Codex use inside a Business workspace.

The Business pricing page lists a dedicated workspace, larger cloud virtual machines, SAML single sign-on and multi-factor authentication. OpenAI’s admin FAQ says SCIM provisioning and synchronized identity groups are not part of Business, and that ChatGPT does not enforce MFA across the whole workspace, so organizations that require it should enforce it through their identity provider.

Enterprise and Edu are quoted by sales and add priority request handling, SCIM, enterprise key management, domain verification, role-based access control, data retention and residency controls, and audit logs through the Compliance API. How to upgrade, use the student offer and cancel

Upgrading takes a few minutes.

  1. Sign in at chatgpt.com with your account (the same login works for every plan).
  2. Open the plans page from your profile menu or the upgrade button.
  3. Pick Go, Plus or Pro and enter a payment method.
  4. Confirm. The new limits apply to the account right away.

To cancel, open billing settings, where you can manage your plan, view invoices and cancel. OpenAI’s Pro guidance says that if you cancel or schedule a downgrade you keep the plan until the end of the current billing cycle, and you can reverse it before then. Check your own billing screen to confirm the same applies to Plus.

For students, OpenAI runs a 2026 Back to School offer: four free monthly billing periods of Plus for current full-time and part-time students at eligible U.S. degree-granting institutions, claimed by October 31, 2026. After that it renews at $20 per month unless you cancel, and cancelling early forfeits the remaining free months. OpenAI’s offer page describes no permanent student discount, and free trials of Plus appear only during specific campaigns. The plan pages list no family plan; Business, with its two-seat minimum, is the shared option.

Limits and things to know before paying

  • Limits change. OpenAI notes that limits and tool access are updated often, and the help center is the final reference.
  • Ads depend on the plan. OpenAI says Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts do not show ads.
  • The API is separate. Subscriptions and API usage are billed independently, and OpenAI advises against using API token prices to estimate what a subscription includes.
  • OpenAI’s pages list Plus as billed monthly, with no annual option.
  • Health and browser tools have their own rollouts. See our coverage of ChatGPT Health and the Atlas browser.
