ChatGPT stock: why you cannot buy it directly and which listed companies are tied to OpenAI

ChatGPT is a product, not a company, and OpenAI has not gone public. Here is what is official about its ownership, its IPO filing and the listed companies tied to it.

Figures checked against official announcements and filings on October 18, 2026.

There is no ChatGPT stock. ChatGPT is a product of OpenAI, and OpenAI is a private company whose shares are not traded on any public exchange as of October 18, 2026. OpenAI said on June 8, 2026 that it had confidentially submitted a draft registration statement to the SEC, but it has not set a listing date, ticker or price.

What the public can buy today are shares of listed companies that hold OpenAI stakes or sell to it. This guide separates what those companies have disclosed from what has only been reported.

Can you buy ChatGPT stock today? No ticker exists

A stock represents ownership in a company, and ChatGPT is not a company. It is the chatbot made by OpenAI Group PBC. No exchange lists OpenAI or ChatGPT, so any ticker, fund or app that claims to sell "ChatGPT shares" is not selling OpenAI stock listed on an exchange.

Two things are easy to confuse. Listed companies such as Microsoft or SoftBank own parts of OpenAI, but their shares give exposure to the whole of those businesses, not to OpenAI alone. And secondary sales of OpenAI shares, where employees sell to approved investors, are private transactions, not public trading. For a fuller walk through, see our guide on OpenAI stock: can you buy it, who owns OpenAI and what an IPO would take.

Who owns OpenAI: a nonprofit foundation controls a public benefit corporation

Microsoft described the structure in its October 28, 2025 announcement. The for-profit business became OpenAI Group PBC, a public benefit corporation controlled by the nonprofit OpenAI Foundation. Microsoft said its investment was valued at about $135 billion, roughly 27% on an as-converted diluted basis, with that figure counting all owners, including employees, investors and the Foundation. Before the recapitalization and the recent funding rounds, Microsoft held 32.5%.

These percentages date from October 2025. Later funding rounds issued new shares, so current stakes are lower than they were then. No updated cap table has been published in the pages reviewed for this guide.

The same Microsoft announcement set out commercial terms:

  • OpenAI contracted to buy an incremental $250 billion of Azure services.
  • Microsoft no longer has a right of first refusal to be OpenAI’s compute provider.
  • Microsoft’s intellectual property rights to OpenAI models and products run through 2032 and now cover post-AGI models, with safety guardrails.

Funding rounds and valuations: $852 billion is the latest price reported for OpenAI

Figures checked on October 18, 2026. Private-round valuations are negotiated prices, not market prices.

Sources by row: the Microsoft row comes from Microsoft’s October 28, 2025 blog post. The SoftBank row comes from SoftBank Group’s February 27, 2026 press release, which gives the tranche dates as April 1, July 1 and October 1, 2026 (Japan time). The Amazon row comes from Amazon’s newsroom page on the partnership. The March 31 row follows OpenAI’s funding update as summarized in our funding rounds history; OpenAI’s own pages could not be opened directly for this check, so that row should be confirmed on openai.com. Employee share sales reported at various valuations are left out because they are private transactions that OpenAI has not detailed.

The IPO: one filing is official, the timing is only reported

Official: OpenAI announced on June 8, 2026 that it had confidentially submitted a draft S-1 to the SEC. A confidential filing lets a company have regulators review its financials before they become public. According to CNBC and TechCrunch, OpenAI said it had not decided on timing. A search of the SEC’s EDGAR company database on October 18, 2026 showed no public OpenAI filing.

Only reported:

  • Fortune reported on September 12, 2026 that Sam Altman said it would be ill-advised to go public in 2026. OpenAI’s own pages do not confirm a new date.
  • Reuters reported in 2025 that an IPO could value OpenAI at up to $1 trillion. OpenAI has not confirmed a figure. Our earlier coverage: OpenAI reportedly preparing for a $1 trillion stock market debut.
  • CNBC cited reports that Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley are leading the process. OpenAI has not named underwriters in anything it published.

Until a public S-1 appears, the share count, price range, exchange and ticker remain unknown.

Listed companies with a disclosed OpenAI link: what each has said itself

Only the companies’ own statements are used here, apart from the Nvidia item, which is labeled as reported. This describes disclosed ties and is not a ranking of investments.

  • Microsoft (MSFT): about 27% of OpenAI Group PBC on an as-converted diluted basis as of October 2025, per its own blog post, plus the Azure and intellectual property arrangements above.
  • SoftBank Group (9984, Tokyo): in its February 27, 2026 release, SoftBank said that after completing a $30 billion follow-on, its cumulative OpenAI investment would be $64.6 billion, an ownership interest of approximately 13%. Reuters reported on October 1, 2026 that SoftBank said it had completed the $30 billion investment.
  • Amazon (AMZN): its newsroom announced a multi-year strategic partnership anchored by a $50 billion investment, starting with $15 billion. Amazon said OpenAI offerings become available in Bedrock and that OpenAI will use Trainium chips. A later report that Amazon completed the investment, giving it about 5%, has not been confirmed by either company.
  • Nvidia (NVDA): Reuters and the Financial Times reported in February 2026 that Nvidia was close to investing $30 billion in the funding round, replacing a September 2025 letter of intent of up to $100 billion. Nvidia’s earlier SEC risk disclosures said there was no assurance of a definitive agreement. Its quarterly report for the period ended July 26, 2026 should be checked on EDGAR for the exact accounting of any stake.

Other companies sell to or supply OpenAI without disclosing ownership and are not listed here. Exposure through any of these tickers is indirect and mixed with each company’s other businesses. For Nvidia’s scale, see Nvidia reaches $5 trillion valuation.

What to watch next: a public S-1, new tranches and updated stakes

  • A public S-1 on EDGAR. It would disclose financials, risks, share classes and the Foundation’s control.
  • Quarterly reports from Microsoft, Amazon, Nvidia and SoftBank. These show how each values its OpenAI holding and any new commitments.
  • An updated cap table. The 27%, 13% and reported 5% figures come from different dates and cannot be added together.
  • Rival listings. Anthropic also submitted a confidential draft S-1 on June 1, 2026. Our Anthropic stock guide covers that case.

Common questions

Is there a ChatGPT stock ticker?

No. ChatGPT is a product, and its maker OpenAI is not listed on any exchange. Any ticker using the ChatGPT name is not an OpenAI share.

Has OpenAI filed for an IPO?

OpenAI announced on June 8, 2026 that it had confidentially submitted a draft S-1 to the SEC. It has not made the filing public or announced a date, price or exchange. Submitting a draft does not guarantee a listing.

Which public companies own part of OpenAI?

Microsoft and SoftBank have each disclosed stakes: about 27% as of October 2025 and about 13% after its $30 billion follow-on, respectively. Amazon has announced a $50 billion investment, and Nvidia’s investment has been reported by Reuters and the Financial Times.

Can I invest in OpenAI before an IPO?

Pre-IPO shares are sold in private rounds and secondary sales, usually open only to institutions and accredited investors. These are not exchange trades, and OpenAI controls who may hold its shares.
