Anthropic reportedly pays AP for news content, its first such deal

Sources told Adweek that Anthropic and the Associated Press signed a licensing deal just before the US midterms. It would be Anthropic's first payment to a digital news publisher for content.

Anthropic and The Associated Press struck a licensing deal shortly before the US midterm elections, according to a report by Adweek’s Mark Stenberg, which cites unnamed sources. If accurate, it is the first time Anthropic has paid a digital news publisher to license its content.

What the report says and what is missing

Adweek’s headline and summary carry only the core claim: a licensing arrangement between the AI company and the AP, signed just before the midterms, and a first for Anthropic in paying a digital news publisher. Neither company’s public channels had a matching announcement that we could find. Searches for an AP or Anthropic statement returned nothing, so the deal rests on Adweek’s sourcing alone.

The public text does not say what Anthropic gets from the AP, how much it pays, how long the agreement runs, or whether the content feeds model training, live answers in Claude, or both. We are not guessing at any of that. Neither company has publicly confirmed the arrangement in anything we could read.

A shift from courtrooms to contracts

Anthropic’s best-known content payment so far was not a license. In 2025 it agreed to a settlement with book authors, which news reports put at $3,000 per book and $1.5 billion in total. That money resolved a dispute over how training material was obtained. A paid license with a news agency is a different kind of payment: it buys access going forward.

The AP is a natural counterpart. It was among the first news organizations to sign a deal with OpenAI, in July 2023, according to a licensing tracker, and Digiday has described AP content reaching Google’s Gemini under a separate agreement. If Adweek’s account holds, Anthropic would now be buying from a source its two main rivals already use.

Timing next to Anthropic’s election work

The deal reportedly landed as Anthropic was preparing for the midterms. The New York Times described efforts by OpenAI, Anthropic and others to stop their tools being used to disrupt the vote, including what it called Anthropic’s first-ever “war room”. Adweek’s summary does not link the two, and nothing public ties the AP agreement to that effort. A licensed wire service could in principle give a chatbot an authoritative source for breaking news, but that is an inference, not something either company has said.

Anthropic is also in the spotlight on the business side: we reported on an IPO that reportedly gets an Australian share offer via CommSec. Content costs and copyright exposure are the kind of items investors tend to examine.

What readers should watch for

The questions that remain are practical. Will Anthropic or the AP confirm the deal and its scope? Will other publishers follow, now that a first payment is reported? And will Claude show AP material with attribution in its answers? Until a statement appears, treat the story as a single-source report.
