Etsy bans AI-written patterns and recipes, but keeps AI art on sale

Etsy will remove AI-generated patterns, recipes and instructions, bar fully bot-made listings and require real photos, while still allowing disclosed AI art.

Etsy said on Thursday it will no longer allow sellers to list AI-generated “functional guides” such as crochet patterns, recipes and instructions, CNBC reported. Sellers must also show a real finished item made from the instructions.

Real photos now required for every listing

According to CNBC, Etsy set out the change in a blog post and in a separate notice to sellers. The ban covers digital downloads that teach a buyer how to make something. Etsy says the listing must show an actual item made from the guide, not a simulated result, so buyers know what to expect.

Etsy also bars listings generated by bots with no human involvement, and each listing needs at least one unedited photo of the real item. AI-generated art stays allowed when the seller plays a clear role and is open about the process. Sellers must disclose AI use and may not pass it off as handmade. The primary Etsy pages could not be opened for this report, so these details rest on CNBC’s account.

Etsy says shoppers cannot tell what is AI

Etsy told sellers that many active buyers say they cannot tell which items involve AI-generated content, calling it a “top-three barrier to shopping more often on Etsy.” These are Etsy’s own claims, and the underlying data is not in the material reviewed. The source also does not say how Etsy will detect AI-written guides, when enforcement starts for existing listings, or how many listings are affected.

A tightening after two years of complaints

Earlier rules were softer. In July 2024, TechCrunch covered Etsy’s generative AI seller policy, which centered on labeling human involvement rather than prohibiting AI output. NBC News reported that crochet buyers suspected AI-made images were being used to sell disappointing patterns. The new ban takes guides out of the AI-allowed category.

CNBC adds that Etsy competes with mass-produced goods and with Amazon, Walmart, TikTok, Temu and Shein, and that Amazon recently began requiring labels on photos or videos featuring AI-generated people. Etsy itself keeps using AI, according to CNBC, for shopper profiles and search results, and has partnered with OpenAI, including a ChatGPT app for product discovery.

For sellers of patterns and recipes, the text and instructions now have to be their own work, backed by photos of a real result. For buyers, the change is meant to make a download less of a gamble, though that depends on enforcement details Etsy has not yet given.
